Bringing Change To Your Life

There is no way around it. People are going to question WHY you do what you do. And the more success you see in ministry, the more people will question your motives. Let me be clear: You can’t win this fight. The only thing that you can do is consistently check your heart to make sure that you are listening to the voice of God and doing what He says. We can lie to people, but we can’t lie to Him. He knows our hearts. One day our motives, if impure, will be exposed, because He will not be mocked! Galatians 6:7

God’s Holiness

God does not conform to any standard created by others. He is the standard. Therefore, He demands that His creation conform to His standard. Some atheists say there could not be a God, given the existence and prevalence of evil. Actually, the opposite is true. You can call evil only if there is a God against whose standard you can measure evil. Bad wouldn’t be bad unless you had a standard that made it bad. You can call something evil because you have a standard-a good and holy God.

God’s holiness unlocks the door to understanding and making sense out of everything else about Him. This attribute infiltrates all the other attributes. His love is holy love. His omniscience is holy omniscience. His omnipresence is holy omnipresence. Everything has been infiltrated by this defining attribute of God called holiness.

You’re Not the Only One

The final stages of your road before arriving here at Teen Challenge were a nightmare. We know it was horrifying and we know it was devastating. There is definitely a prerequisite of pain before enrolling into any Teen Challenge. You have without a doubt been through a wilderness of life that may be un-parallel to anything even you have experienced.

The Lord is your Redeemer and he will rectify and more than make up for everything. You will find what I found; All those people that wrote you off will trust you again. They will invest in you and believe in you. What you came here as a last resort for will end up being the meaning f your life. See there is this thing called getting in His will first. Once you do that, you will know things just start to work out for you (not only on the outside, but also on the inside). You were created for a specific purpose on this earth. You are not just number. Your steps are ordered by the lord.

Goodbye Flesh

The Holy Spirit wants to identify the root of your problem and rip that ugly thing clear out of your soul. He wants to bring permanent change to your life. But for you to receive this soul-cleansing work of God, you will have to make your flesh shut up and move out of the way. And after you tell your flesh to be silent, then you’ll have to allow God to speak truthfully to you. This will demand that you spend time looking into the mirror of God’s Word so you can see what is wrong and what needs to be changed. If you’re willing to do all this, God’s Spirit will set you free. Yes, your flesh will scream in pain; but when it does, just take authority over it and tell it to be silent. It is screaming because it knows that it is losing the power it has always exercised in your life!

Wish and It Shall Be Given

Look at that word abide. It is another word that calls for action. It means to live in or take up residence.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t afford to not have some faith. I mean there are obviously some pros and cons to this and I think I want to be a part of the pros amen. I don’t have to be perfect, just willing. Oh he’ll take me just as I am the song says. Our pastor has told us that He is not interested in my ability, but my availability.

Repent-It’s So Much Easier

There are going to be times when you “miss the mark”. There are going to be iniquities in life because we live in this flesh suit.

You cannot afford to even get momentum gathered in the direction of negativity or non-repentance.

People, that is old behavior. You and I have a history of not being able to have just one. Well it is the same with an attitude of negativity or leaving. It has a powerful way about itself. The enemy is waiting for you to get on that train. Beware of this spirit. Identify with it quickly so you can disarm the enemy. You know how I do it? I apologize for what I have done wrong quickly. You are in Teen Challenge. You submitted everything at the door and waved all your rights.

The Hidden People

So often we talk about the pathway to a life in oneness with the Lord. Yes, we discuss the pathway to a life of anointing in the Spirit. Yet we rarely meet the Lord on his terms, on his playing field, in the secret place. This hidden life in God means ultimate death to soulish and fleshly motivations. The source of all strength, significance, and spiritual power comes from a history of seeking God in “the secret place:”. It is a personal, intimate relationship with the Almighty that imparts wisdom., character and motivation to a special group of individuals, “a hidden people.”

A hidden people accomplish their assignments from the Lord in prayer before presuming to know how to accomplish them in their natural strength. This means their work’s success or failure is based simply upon the answer to prayer. Because of the faithfulness and humility of their prayers, God uses them as a vehicle to bring His will to pass in this earth.

The next characteristic of hiddenness is that of forgiveness or graciousness. When we become hidden in God and dead to self, we are no longer “jumpy” or touchy. If someone rubs us the wrong way, we don’t lose our salvation. People can stomp on us and run over us and it doesn’t matter. You can’t offend a dead man. See, dead men don’t care if they get their own way, as long as God gets His.

The third characteristic of a hidden person is that of compassion. Compassion is foundational, affecting all of our motivations and decisions. When the love of God is the driving force empowering us for service, we will have the anointing to move in and demonstrate the ministry of Jesus. We can see Jesus’ earthly ministry that He was continually “moved,” or motivated by compassion. The results were miraculous.

Grow Up!!

Write this down: you pursue anything to the degree that you value it. That sounds profound but it is very practical.

You need to let go of some old routines and develop some new habits and intentionally change the way you think. The word says to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. The work out is your responsibility, and the work in is God’s role. So you can see that spiritual growth (which is the source of all growth in your life) is a collaborative effort between you and the Holy Spirit. God’s Spirit works with us, not just in us.

A willing person never says things like that anymore, because they are a new creation-the old has past, behold the new has come! Life changes always happen in the mind first. The way you think determines the way you feel, and the way you feel influences the way you act.

The Strength in Weakness

Admit your weaknesses. Stop pretending to have it all together and be honest about yourself. Now, he has something to work with. If you really want God to use you, you must know who YOU are.

Jesus sent his disciples out two by two. Staff is important, counseling has it’s place, but Jesus talks about a friend that sticks closer than a brother.

I’m just waiting on God. Stop waiting and get involved all the way. You weren’t in addiction half-way. Why do this thing half-way? All or none.

Define Your Moment in Life

Obviously, we must first make a choice. Turn to Deuteronomy 30:15… Therefore choose life it says in verse 19. Pretty straight-forward right? In fact, Jesus says n John 10:110 I came that they might have life, life more abundantly. The NIV says have it to the full. He wants so much for you.

A Real Encounter with God Leads to Real Change

So is the moral of the story that if you have a real encounter with God you get an emotional charge of excitement like Isaiah? Is that going to be your barometer when you look at sister Marcia and she has an emotional state of being?…..not! You look for a real change that has taken place. Now internalize that for a second. You’ve got to realize , “man I’m here to change, and there is no way that I am coming here for thirteen months of my life and look back and not be able to say that I had a true encounter with God. There is no way that my family is going to know that I cam here an not realize that I had a true encounter with God here…Well what are they going to have to realize that has taken place in order to know that? When you’ve had a true encounter with God, your attitude, your character, and your faith changes.

That place that God called you; that place requiring your obedience, faith, and patience; that place where you are confident God wants you to be working and functioning-that is the address of faith where God wants you to live. As long as you stay in that place where God told you to be, you are “in” faith and you therefore please God. But the day you give up and move “out” of that place of faith, you are moving to cheaper territory that God doesn’t value as highly-a location where you will experience the hardships and inconveniences of poor choices and defeat.

The Gardening Principle

How does your garden grow? You cannot neglect a relationship and expect it to grow. That’s not to say that all relationships are the same and need the same amount of time and attention. The nature and purpose of the relationship will determine the energy and time needed to cultivate it.

God Pulls Strings

Understand and convince yourself every day that God pulls strings. That is what trusting God is right. Having a confidence that he is going to settle everything and make it ok. True faith is confident obedience to God’s word in spite of circumstances or consequences.

Compassion

How do we know that God is passionate about us? The proof is the cross. Jesus stretched out His hands and they nailed Him to the cross and He was in essence saying, “I’d rather die than live without you. That’s how passionate I am about my creation. I made you. I love you. And I’d rather die than live without you.

Thanksgiving Can Change Your Life

You know what I have found to be true in my life? I have found that I have an overwhelming need to give thanks. There is a desire within me to give thanks to something for what I have. Everything we own, we ultimately received from God and we owe him thanks. James 1:17, “Every good and perfect gift is from above coming down from the Father of heavenly lights, who does not change like the shifting sand.” Paul made sure that he let people in the churches know that he was thankful for them. Imagine how much better our church and our relationships would be if we expressed our thanks for each other.

Balance Teaching One

God’s way must be our priority versus the worldly approach that minimizes or negates true justice, righteousness, and godliness. There is a time to do most things, but they must always be done by God’s standards and not the world’s. While God wants us to provide for our families, being a workaholic and failing as a mate or parent is not being balanced. God wants us to study His word but not to the exclusion of everything else, especially one’s other important responsibilities. There is a time to have fun but not when it affects more important personal, family, or spiritual needs. Balance is an aspect of godly love, as shown in Philippians 2:3-4:”Lot nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.”

The Law of the Picture

The law of the picture says that people do what people see. When leaders show the way with the right actions, their followers copy them and succeed. Great leaders always seem to embody two seemingly disparate qualities. They are both highly visionary and highly practical. Their vision enables them to see beyond the immediate. They can envision what’s coming and what must be done. Leaders possess an understanding of how:

  • Mission provides purpose-answering the question. Why?
  • Vision provides a picture-answering the question, What?
  • Strategy provides a plan-answering the question, How?
  • As author Hans Finzel observed, “Leaders are paid to be dreamers. The higher you go in leadership the more your wok is about the future”.

Momentum

The attitude of the leader, coupled with a positive atmosphere in the organization, can encourage people to accomplish great things. And consistent accomplishment generates momentum. Many times momentum is the only difference between a winning, positive growth climate and a losing, negative growth climate.

Leaders cannot afford to overlook the importance of momentum: With momentum, Leaders look better than they actually are. With momentum, followers increase their performance. Without momentum, leaders look worse than they actually are. Without momentum, followers decrease their performance.

Team Concept

Whether you win or lose a particular game-which there are 162 in baseball per season, the most important and vital part of the whole game is the team’s cohesiveness. It is crucial that the team learns to read each other, share the same goals and has the same vision. They depend on the leadership to guide them but at the time of play, it is up to them to react without hesitation. Each team member has the ability to influence the person around them. Their attitude is vital and contagious. The team also has worked on memorizing strengths and weaknesses of the opposing team and each other. Instead of tearing each other down, they are willing to step up and do extra to ensure that the team as a whole is working effectively. There is only one ball at play during the game, therefore not everyone can chase after the ball to make the play. Someone has to cover the bases and be ready at a moment’s notice for whatever is coming up next.

Against the Odds

No matter how unfair life seems or how often you may have failed in the past, you can still change and improve your life. And not only change, but grow into the best, most authentic version of yourself that you can be. My friends, it’s time to stop feeling that the odds are stacked against you and time to start stacking the odds in your favor!

Built to Build

Be a people builder everywhere you go. Take time to compliment someone for no reason other than to please God. Do you want to see the miraculous or not? Look, do I have to remind you that you are in a spiritual program where you get to see the supernatural reveal itself? Watch what happens. Everywhere you go, make positive deposits, instead of negative withdrawals. When you get up in the morning, instead of applying your energies to how you can be blessed, find some way to be a blessing to someone else. If you will make somebody else’s day, God will make yours. I will say it one final time so you don’t miss your blessing. If you take the time to make someone else’s day, God will make yours. Make it a lifestyle, he will make your life an incredible beautiful portrait. Flow of God’s economy.. All you have to give is what you’ve been given to give.

Power Under Pressure

Friend, if you are facing a Red Sea situation, remember, it only seems impossible to you. God has a plan; it may be something different than you could ever imagine, but He has a plan. He will get you to the other side. He has not left you.

Plug It In!

Now what kinds of gifts will God give you? That depends on the job He has called you to do. Paul talked about these gifts in 1 Corinthians. God has every angle covered. He provides the job, the “service”, and the power. All you have to do is believe it number one, and gain that relationship with the Holy Spirit. Stop leaving Him out. He is your source of power. Rely on Him. He will give you the strength to resist temptation, yes, but do so much more than that. He will give you your life plan. He will feed you the details you have always wanted. He is the power to execute that plan that he leads you toward. He is a powerful person!

When the Tables Turn

Galatians 5:22-23 says When the Holy Spirit controls our lives, he will produce this kind of fruit in us: love, joy, peace, gentleness, and self-control. You may have had your sins forgiven, but you achieved no spiritual maturity because your flesh was in the way. On the path to spiritual maturity, even temptation becomes a stepping stone rather than a stumbling block when you realize that it is just as much an occasion to do the right thing as it is to do the wrong thing. Every time you choose to do good instead of sin, you are growing in the character of Christ. So, God uses the opposite situation of each fruit to allow us a choice. Integrity is built by defeating the temptation to be dishonest; humility grows when we refuse to be prideful; and endurance develops every time you reject the temptation to give up. We are in a disciple process here, so every time you defeat a temptation, you become more like Jesus!

Intensity

He is not a half-way God anyway, that is why his first commandment says you shall have no other gods before me! He is the all out pillar of NO COMPROMISE who demands that we live in Him. In John 15:1 Jesus says I am the vine and you are the branches. If you abide in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit. Apart from me you can do nothing….If you abide in me and my words abide in you ask what you wish and it shall be given.

He is an abundant, overflowing, more than you can contain God….Not just enough-or barely getting by God.

Your choice is between Christ or Satan. There are two masters in the world; we cannot serve them both (Matthew 6:24) The word of God in Joshua 24:15 says choose this day whom ye will serve.

The Attitude to Approach Life

All of us have the ability and the privilege to choose our attitudes, no matter what the circumstances. Over time autopilot takes over because of the preprogramming we’ve done. It is vital for you to understand that you can choose your own thinking, As you understand that you can choose your own thinking. As you learn to think like God thinks, it enables you to partner with Him in accomplishing whatever you need.

What redemption does not do. Limited redemption –be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind. Either you conform or you transform. I’m afraid of being trapped on the street corner of my experiences and not growing past the culture that has so shaped me. I’m afraid of not living. The world is bigger than your world and that reality-don’t die on the street corner of your perspective. Don’t settle for that corner that shaped your ideas.

We were all born with a built-in death warrant, which is our sin nature, because we have inherited this sin nature from Adam because of his actions, but when we came to Christ we are not sinners anymore. Don’t just talk about God, but engage with the world to evangelize the world in your own special way from your special corner of the world where the Lord has placed you for that particular moment, week, or month in your life. Redeemed people have the very evidence of redemption.

IF YOU ARE REDEEMED YOU ARE DEDICATED

Commitment

You will never bring the Giant down without the commitment, If I just go to college, that I will get a job and get jobs forever. That wasn’t the truth. People in America are finding that everywhere they go. And then, I used to think that if someone had an education you would really get something in a staff member for that-they have the information but they don’t have the character, dedication and the tenacity to perform. I’d rather hire someone that had the guts-had the commitment-in a perfect world I’d love to have both, but if I had to choose, I’d rather have someone that just has a real commitment-because those people can go back and learn.

INTENSITY

Intensity is an interesting thing. Some people don’t think of themselves as intense until they find something they care deeply about. Oftentimes we can be intense about the wrong things. I can get really intense when someone cuts me off in traffic; what a waste. We should be intentional about our intensity. Our intensity must purposefully be directed at things that really matter and purposefully not directed at things that don’t.

But don’t be intense about the wrong things. I want to make sure I am intense and focused when working on the things that matter. If I am willing to lose my voice yelling for someone else to be successful on the football field, I should also be serving in my leadership role with great intensity. I should be engaged in conversation with my wife of thirty years with even more intensity than when we were dating. I should pursue friendships and my spiritual walk with fervor. I should be passionate about work that matters,

The Shepherding Leadership Style

Leaders must remember that although there are many cause-driven people who are waiting to be drawn into a mission by a visionary leader, there are also plenty of community starved people who need to be welcomed onto a team where they can be nurtured and loved. Only then will they be motivate to answer the call of a cause. Without tender care they will hold back, but if shepherded lovingly they will joyfully pursue almost any kingdom purpose with loyal dedication. The shepherd has to speak in order for them to recognize His voice.

Where I Am

We are on a constant quest for truth and beauty of a changed life. We will find fresh ways to communicate the gospel to the postmodern mind. Postmodernism is the intellectual boundary between the old world and the other side.

Give It Up

Christ gave up his reputation. No one in Nazareth saluted Him as the Son of God. He did not stand out in his elementary-classroom photograph, demanding no throne to sit on in the classroom, or crown to wear on the playground. His friends knew him as a woodworker, not a star hanger. His looks turned no heads; His position earned him no credit. In the great “lowering of Himself we call Christmas, Jesus gave up heavenly rank and crawled out among the hay and horse-stall of this earth because you and I were worth it? Hard to comprehend-yet a principle that must be duplicated for you to step into the river of your destiny!

The Final Countdown

What are you going to do with your circumstances-with your countdown. You are so important to the Lord than some space shuttle taking off. You have a choice to do something with your countdown. This is your capsule in time to prepare. The second half of your life does not have to be the same as the first. To be effective with your countdown-you might want to become a student of I, gives a new meaning to the word student doesn’t it? Even companies respect this type of situation. If they are going to launch a new product, they determine a launch situation. If they are going to launch a new product, they determine a launch date. They have a countdown called a pre-launch period where they will get their affairs in order-come up with all these marketing approaches-advertising campaigns-book all these trade show dates……. They will really study and meditate with this time. They take it as serious as the situation at hand. I mean. They have put millions of dollars into this product. Yeah, serious man hours too. What should you do with your serious situation at hand?

Worry Warts Watch Out

We are not fretting over the right things. If we could see that the Lord is up there saying-If you are going to worry, why not be concerned about pleasing me? I am the Lord your God…….I am the only one that can change anything for your good anyway. I’m talking to someone here tonight. Look at Matthew 6:27-Jesus said worry was irrelevant. When was the last time you solved a problem by worrying about it?

Thinking for a Change 11 Ways Highly Successful People Approach Life and Work

In the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, I wrote about the Law of the Lid, which states, “Leadership ability determines a person’s level of effectiveness. In other words, in any endeavor with people, your leadership is the lid…
Your thinking is the lid for your potential. If you’re an excellent thinker, then you have excellent potential and the words of Emerson ring true; “Beware when the great God lets loose a great thinker on the planet.

Attitude Adjustment

If you can keep your attitude the way Jesus kept his attitude, we will be so much better off! If you can adjust your attitude on a daily basis, you can enjoy your life!
Let me ask you a question-is your problem really your problem, or is it your attitude about your problem really your problem. Change your outlook, you can change your life. Your attitude affects everything, everything in your life. An airplane has an attitude indicator and it shows the position of the plane to the horizon. When it is diving, it has a nose down attitude. If the horizon is average,
where is your attitude? Ask God, is there any adjustment that I need to make to my attitude?

Developing the Real You

I came to deliver a message to someone who has had good ideas. You are on the verge of perfect-the baby is coming. You haven’t had your best idea yet! God is doing a new thing in you. There is someone on the inside of you that wants to live-that needs to be fed, crying out to let me out!!!! Anyone who has left you is going to miss it. It took everything that happened to you yesterday, is going into the makeup of what you are about to be today. We believe there are concepts in you, CEO’s in you, ideas in you, inventions in you. There can be businesses in you, books, paintings in you-something that could radically change your life. Someone could take the same cards you have been dealt and do something great with your set of circumstances, but we don’t need them, because we’ve got you!!! There is someone inside of everyone that is capable of conceptualizing an idea of the new you-you might need prayers for the new you followed by notepads and recorders. The baby is coming-the new you is coming –your ideal you-its about time!

At the End of the Day

The lives we lead do not always lend time for inner reflection. We’re so busy that we don’t make space for prayer, for meditation. We don’t really examine. We throw ourselves into this busy-ness so deeply that we don’t take the time to pause for even a Sabbath, if you will. Everything else in creation has a Sabbath-a winter, a season of not being fruitful. It can be hard at first to identify that internal heartbeat, but recognizing it determines what will give you fulfillment and gratification. Think of it as an inward applause for every moment where you feel in harmony with yourself, and when you hear it-be it loud and clear or soft and slightly muffled-you’ll know exactly what it is and what you’re meant to do.

Get Practical!

I would rather see a sermon than hear one anytime. Then, after I see someone walk that talks, then I will listen to them preach and preach. James 2:20 –faith without works is dead . Remember that we are called to serve God and that means serving man in many cases. The measuring stick of our commitment it not our lip service, but our life. Action is our gauge whether someone really means it or not.

The Law of Navigation

First-rate navigators always have in mind that other people are depending on them and their ability to chart a good course.

Being able to navigate for others requires a leader to possess a positive attitude. You’ve got to have faith that you can take your people all the way. If you can’t confidently make the trip in your mind, you’re not going to be able to take it in real life. On the other hand, you also have to be able to see the fact realistically. You can’t minimize obstacles or rationalize your challenges. If you don’t go in with your eyes wide open, you’re going to get blindsided. Realistic leaders are objective enough to minimize illusions. They understand that self-deception can cost them their vision.” Sometimes it’s difficult balancing optimism and realism, intuition and planning, faith and fact. But that’s what it takes to be effective as a navigating leader. If the leader can’t navigate the people through rough waters, he is able to sink the ship.

Major barriers to successful planning are fear of change, ignorance, uncertainty about the future, and lack of imagination.

Nehemiah Continued (Navigation)

Last week I spoke on the Law of Navigation. In the case of Nehemiah, the report created the burden and the burden led to the vision. Most people desire to name the vision first, but God doesn’t work that way in our lives. Acting on that burden reveals the purpose in your life. Leadership thought for the day: A leader follows the carpenter’s rule: measure twice, saw once. Go to Luke 14:28-30

The walls of Jerusalem were rebuilt because of Nehemiah’s ability to work with people and lead them where they needed to go.

Are you setting aside the appropriate amount of time to focus entirely on planning? Even a relatively simple task may require a few hours of planning. Something major may require a few days.

The Law of Influence

Influencing others is a choice: Many people who experience ineffectiveness as leaders give up and never try to lead again. Fortunately for the children of Israel, Joshua was not that type of person. He desired to become a better leader. And he would later receive a second chance. Meanwhile, he continued to be faithful to God and to learn as much as he could from Moses, who became his mentor.

One thing I have learned is that your influence will grow when you are right. From the beginning, Joshua had tried to do the right thing. He had tried to lead the people in the direction they should go. The first generation missed their opportunity to obey God and prosper.

Not only was Joshua right, but he also tried to model right-living. As a result, he consistently lived beyond his ability as a leader. If you desire to do great things in your leadership, then try to live according to this pattern that Joshua modeled.

Never try to explain God until you’ve obeyed him. The only part of God we understand is the part we have obeyed.

Across the Jordan

You cannot have growth without some un-comfortability on any level- personally, or at the ministry level. The very fact that we have to re-establish some rules and tighten up some areas in this ministry only reveals a ministry that God is exploding. We have endlessly prayed for the Lord to flourish this place with blessings that we cannot contain. He rewards those who diligently seek Him, but sometimes you have to actually get up and walk onto the stage to receive that reward. So receiving takes some effort at times. The Tabernacle was a glorious sight, but the preparation and the measurement alone were extensive. Everything had to be right-the cover for the Ark, the plans for the lampstand, and table, the burnt offering. The Lord’s instructions to Moses were lengthy, but for great reason-the Lord’s glory was about to be revealed.

It’s not what you say, but how you say it. It’s not what you do, but how you do it. There are effective ways to do God’s work. Let’s rejoice with God the rest of the way across this Jordan. We have great reason to.

Surveying the Battlefield in These Times

Believers have been intimidated into silence because of their perception of being in the minority. They have been sucked into the spiral of silence. The truth is more valuable than anyone’s opinion, regardless of how well read or well fed they may appear to be. We, as believers, must never again allow some professor intimidate us because he feels he has some kind of intellectual superiority over us. The believer must stand in possession of absolute truth and never give up his or her ground.

Right Dream

Right Dream, Right Day, Right Destiny

Now this dream or vision-one of the most important ways you can tell if a dream or a vision is from God is that it will always be bigger than you are. A vision from God is orchestrated by God. You can undertake extreme measure to see Him and you’re that interested in seeing Jesus, you will see Him not only at a distance, but also up close. He will invite Himself to your house. It will change your life.

Unlocking God’s Purpose in Your Life

When the mantle hits, it is the still small voice of the Holy Spirit that will say, “this is your moment dear. RUN after that prophet! Always be in a state of readiness and expectation. God’s power collides with our potential. DIVINE CONNECTION. ALSO realize that destiny-defining moments take place in ordinary, everyday circumstances. In order to be trusted with a destiny-defining moment, we need to be good stewards of the unique moment we have been given right now.

The Four Disciplines of Execution

When you implement Discipline 1 you start by selecting one or at the most, two extremely important goals, instead of trying to significantly improve everything all at once. We call this a WIG-a wildly important goal to make it clear to the team that this is the goal that matters most.

Discipline 2: Act on the Lead Measures

This is the discipline of leverage. It’s based on the simple principle that all actions are not created equal. Some actions have more impact than others when reaching for a goal. And it is those that you want to identify and act on if you want to reach your goal. Whatever strategy you’re pursuing, your progress and your success will be based on two kinds of measures: lag and lead.

Lag measures are the tracking measurements of the wildly important goal, and they are usually the ones you spend most of your time praying over. Lead measures are quite different in that they are the measures of the most high-impact your teams must do to reach the goal. In essence, they measure the new behaviors that will drive success on the lag measures, whether those behaviors are as simple as offering a sample to every customer in the bakery or as complex as adhering to standards in jet-engine design.

Discipline 3: Keep a Compelling Scoreboard

Discipline 3 is the discipline of engagement. In principle, the highest level of performance always comes from people who are emotionally engaged and the highest level of engagement comes from knowing the score-that is, if people know whether they are winning or losing.

Discipline 4: Create a Cadence of Accountability

Cadence is a balanced rhythmic flow. This discipline is where execution really happens. The first three disciplines set up the game, but until you apply Discipline 4, your team isn’t in the game. It is based on the principle of accountability. That unless we consistently hold each other accountable, the goal naturally disintegrates in the whirlwind.

The cadence of accountability is a rhythm of regular and frequent meetings of any team that owns a wildly important goal. These meetings happen at least weekly and ideally last no more than twenty to thirty minutes. In that brief time, team members hold each other accountable for producing results, despite the whirlwind.

How Badly Do You Want to Win?

Well, how badly do you want to win your race? Well Paul looked at his divine destiny that lay before him like a runner looks at the finish line. Rather than approach his spiritual race lazily and half-heartedly, Paul did everything within his power to preach the Gospel. If it meant getting a job on the side in order to be able to preach, that’s what Paul did (Acts 18:3). If it meant becoming as a Jew in order to be able to preach to the Jews, that’s what Paul did (1 Corinthians 9:20). And if it meant becoming as those without law to win those who were without law, that’s what Paul did (1 Corinthians 9:21). He became all things to all men in order that he might win some to the Lord (1 Corinthians 9:22). Paul suffered hardship, persecution, lack, cold, hunger, nakedness, homelessness, trouble from false brethren, trouble from true brethren-on the city, in the wilderness, and even at sea. Paul never lost sight of the fact that he was called of God and that he would one day account for what he did with that calling. The finish line was always before him! He kept one thing foremost in his mind and preeminent in his thinking: I must obtain the prize. I must fulfill the purpose for which I was born. I must achieve the plan of God for my life.

Have It To The Full

He wants so much for you.

Leadership Styles Two

Discovering/Developing Your Own

The team-building leader knows the vision and understands how to achieve it, but realizes it will take a team of leaders and workers to accomplish the goal. Team-builders have a supernatural insight into people that allows them to successfully find and develop the right people with the right abilities, the right character, builders know how to put these people in the right positions for the right reasons, thus freeing them to produce the right results.

When the appropriate people have been placed in appropriate positions, the team-building leader says to the appointed team, “You know what we’re trying to do. You know what part of the mission you’re responsible for. You know what part the rest of us around the circle are responsible for. So-head out! Get on with it! Work hard in your department.

Who Is Your Toughest Leadership Challenge?

Recall the first five chapters of Mark’s Gospel. Do you remember Jesus’ pattern of intense ministry activity quickly followed by time set aside for reflection, prayer, fasting, and solitude? Jesus repeated that pattern throughout his ministry. In our terms, Jesus was practicing the art of self-leadership. He knew he needed to go to a quiet place and recalibrate. He knew he needed to remind himself who he was and how much the Father loved him. Even Jesus needed to invest regularly in keeping his calling clear, avoiding mission drift, and keeping distraction, discouragement, and temptation at bay.

This is self-leadership. And nobody-I mean nobody-can do this work for us. Every leader has to do this work alone, and it isn’t easy. In fact, most leaders avoid it. We would rather try to inspire or control the behavior of others than face the rigorous work of self-reflection and inner growth.

Let me tell you-Pastors are let go every day. Business leaders are let go every day. Coaches and CEO’s are let go every day. Whether things are their fault or not-whether the situation can be turned around or not-self leadership will have to be relied on to continue and fight another day-say self investment.

The Process (Be a Student of the Student)

Watching the news the other night, I saw soldiers that were fighting in Iraq. Many of them were interviewed and asked their thoughts on whether they thought they should be pulled out of Iraq and brought home. All of them said no way! Everything we have fought for over the last 3 years would be for nothing. Everything we have worked for would go to waste. Everything those soldiers have died for would have become meaningless. If you are a student at Teen Challenge that has struggles and sometimes feels like throwing in the towel….This message is for you. Don’t you dare even entertain the thought of stopping now. Don’t’ you dare let the tears that you shed go to waste. Getting through those days and nights of crying was priceless.

Don’t Believe It

Don’t believe the yardsticks of the world. Don’t believe anything other than what the Lord tells you. Now, keep in mind that he will commonly tell you standards morals and values through his word and his church and people he has in place for certain seasons in your life.

Success does not signal God’s love. Struggles don’t indicate the lack of his love. Don’t believe it. 1 John 4:16-god is love. Notice this scripture has nothing to do with the word “you” in it. Others love you because of you, your dimples or your charm. Not God. He loves you because He is He. Because he decides to. self-generated, uncaused, and spontaneous, his constant level of love depends on His choice to give.

Worship Will Bring Transformation

You don’t become an effective leader by default. You must be intentional. And you must work from your strengths. Discovering your purpose starts by discovering your strengths. Why? Because people’s purpose in life is always connected to their giftedness., you are not called to do something you have no talent for.

Improvement is always related to your ability. The greater your natural ability, the greater your potential for improvement. I’ve known people who thought that reaching their potential would come from shoring up their weaknesses. If you work really hard you might work your way up to mediocrity. Nobody admires or rewards mediocrity. Only your best will add value to others and lift them up.

Discover your uniqueness, then discipline yourself to develop it. Like myself I strive to be a motivational teacher, not just a speaker. For the last decade of my life, I have disciplined my life to develop that uniqueness.

Whenever you see people who are successful in their work, they are in their strength zone. Good leaders help others find their strength zones and empower them to work in them. The best leaders specialize in matching these two up!
